Do you need to report a water leak?

One of the most common questions is whether or not I am responsible for a water leak. In short, anything on your land is your responsibility. If there is a water leak in your garden or driveway, you usually have to find and fix it. If you have insurance, there is a good chance you will be covered.

If you don’t know where it is, Prime Disaster Response can help locate the source of the leak to see if it is your fault or the water company’s. Water leak detection tools and procedures are in place to help locate leaks accurately. What the next steps are going to be determined by that.

From the diagram below, you can see that mains water or supply pipe leaks will benefit from underground water leak detection to locate burst pipes.

Report a Water Leak – Who To?

If you have determined that the water leak is not your responsibility, then you will need to speak to your local water company who will help you and likely send someone out to repair the leak. Water companies don’t like water leaks to continue as they waste water that they are producing, so you should report a water leak to them. The targets for water companies to reduce water leaks have been set by the UK’s water company regulators.
